Digestive Enzymes: Rapid Relief for Indigestion from Holiday Feasting

by Steven Horne

Oh, the joys of holiday dinners. Many of us look forward to this feasting with mouth-watering anticipation, but unfortunately, a lot of us get carried away and eat more than we should. The result is sleepiness and indigestion. (The TV show Mythbusters just proved it isn’t the tryptophan in the turkey that makes you sleepy, it’s overeating).

So, if you overindulge, it’s time to break out the enzyme supplements. Enzymes, along with hydrochloric acid and bile salts, are the catalysts that break food down into usable components. Without them, food just rots in the digestive tract, producing acid irritation, belching, bloating and gas. Poor digestion also contributes to toxicity in the body and compromised immunity, not to mention bad breath and body odor.

Unfortunately, many people reach for antacids to settle their holiday indigestion. In fact, many people regularly use antacids to treat their indigestion. This just makes the problem worse because it neutralizes the stomach acid necessary to break down food. Most of these people would be much better off taking digestive enzyme supplements.

Enzyme supplements aren’t just for holidays and overeating. Many people have chronically poor digestion, especially from diets comprised mainly of cooked food. Taking enzymes helps the body utilize food better, which can result in overall better health. It can also reduce appetite and help with weight loss. And, the benefits don’t stop there. Taking digestive enzymes can also reduce allergic reactions, increase energy, ease pain and help to detoxify the body.

Taken between meals, enzymes benefit the immune system and destroy yeast, harmful bacteria and parasites. For instance, you can take Artemesia Combination or Herbal Pumpkin along with Food Enzymes or High Potency Protease between meals to help rid the body of parasites. Using Proactazyme or Food Enzymes with GastroHealth or Cat’s Claw Combination between meals can help balance intestinal flora and get rid of harmful bacteria. Finally, Yeast/Fungal Detox or Capryilic Acid Combination can be taken with Food Enzymes or High Potency Protease to combat fungal infections. One can also use Candida Clear for fungal infections as it contains a special packet of enzymes to take between meals.

Enzyme supplements like High Potency Protease and Food Enzymes have also been used as part of a natural  program for combating cancer. For this purpose, they are also taken between meals.

Here are some enzyme supplements to consider:

Proctazyme: Proactazyme is a good enzyme supplement for most people. It contains the plant-based enzymes that are missing from most modern diets. These enzymes assist the body in breaking down all three major types of foodstuffs—proteases to break down protein, lipases to break down fats, and amylases to break down carbohydrates. It also contains enzymes that break down the complex sugars in beans and vegetables that cause intestinal gas.

Food Enzymes: For more serious digestive problems, Food Enzymes are a better choice. This formula supplies the digestive secretions and enzymes normally produced by the human body to break down food. It contains hydrochloric acid and pepsin (secreted by the stomach to break down proteins), bile salts (secreted by the gall bladder to emulsify fats) and pancreatic enzymes (which break down fats, proteins and carbohydrates). This blend also contains bromelain, an enzyme from pineapples, and papain, an enzyme from papayas—both of which help to break down proteins.

Food Enzymes is particularly helpful for elderly people whose digestive systems often produce less digestive fluids and enzymes. It is also beneficial for people who are suffering from chronic illness and “wasting” because they are having a difficult time absorbing nutrients.

Papaya Mint Tablets: This blend contains papaya, a fruit containing the enzyme papain, which breaks down protein. It also contains the essential oil of peppermint, which is traditionally used for gas and indigestion. Sweetened with fructose and sorbitol, these tasty, chewable tablets will help to relieve acid indigestion, acid reflux, belching, bloating, gas, heartburn and poor digestion. They are a safe enzyme remedy, even for children, and they make excellent natural breath mints, too. Children can also take Sunshine Heros Whole Foods Papayazyme.

PDA: When people have specific problems breaking down proteins, there are three products that may be helpful. PDA Combination supplies hydrochloric acid (HCl) and pepsin, the digestive secretions produced by the stomach to break down proteins. As we age, HCl production tends to diminish, making this a very good supplement for the elderly.

Protease Enzymes: Protease enzymes, which break down protein, are also available in two potencies, Protease Plus and High Potency Protease. High Potency Protease is about three times stronger than Protease Plus. These supplements are very beneficial for people with poor protein metabolism, food allergies or immune problems. Taken between meals they can help rid the intestines of parasites and assist the body in fighting cancer. Caution: Protein-digesting aids (HCl and proteases) should not be taken by persons with gastric ulcers.

Other Enzyme Supplements

If you suffer from gas after drinking milk or eating dairy foods like ice cream, you may be lactose intolerant. Lactose is a sugar found in milk that requires the enzyme lactase to digest. Lactase Plus will help those who have difficulty digesting dairy products, as it contains both lactase and protease enzymes that break down milk sugar and milk proteins.

Lipases are a class of enzymes produced by the salivary glands, pancreas and stomach that assist in the breakdown of dietary fats. For individuals who have had their gallbladder removed or for those with difficulty digesting foods containing fats, such as nuts or fried food, Hi-Lipase can be a useful enzyme supplement.

Researchers have found that consuming 20 teaspoons of sugar (approximately 2.5 cans of soda) can reduce the germ-killing ability of lymphocytes by 40%.

Natural Health Products: 7 Essentials You Didn’t Know You Were Missing

Nature’s Sunshine – Healthy Living

You do everything right to live a healthy lifestyle. You eat healthy, take your vitamins, and exercise regularly. But does it ever feel like that isn’t enough?

Even with all the hard work we put into our bodies there are still some things we don’t do because it probably hasn’t crossed our minds.

When considering natural health supplements, it’s common to ask, “What is my body missing?”

If you feel like you need an extra boost to your daily routine, here are seven essentials that you may have overlooked.

1. L-Glutamine

L-Glutamine is an amino acid that can be found naturally and is produced more than any other amino acid in the human body. This amino acid is found in abundance in our muscles and our lungs. The list of L-Glutamine benefits goes on and on, but the main benefit is that it supports cellular growth, energy, and repair.

L-Glutamine is commonly used by athletes because of its amazing ability to speed up the body’s recovery process. It also helps maintain decreasing glutamine levels while athletes work out because our bodies tend to deplete the amino acid during intense training. This, and its ability to maintain muscle mass, is why more and more athletes are choosing to add it into their daily routines.

L-Glutamine’s benefits stretch beyond the ability to help athletes speed up their recovery process. This multipurpose amino acid has been used for people who have been diagnosed with more serious conditions because of its ability to support the immune system and digestion.

Whether you’re a long-time athlete or just a beginner, L-Glutamine can be a great addition to your daily routine. It will support your muscles and help you recover faster, giving you the opportunity to get back to your workout routine more quickly.

2. CoQ10

CoQ10, or Coenzyme Q10, is found naturally in every cell in our bodies. This substance is very similar to a vitamin and helps produce the energy that we need to maintain cell growth. This substance could be called a “super vitamin” because of its ability to act as an antioxidant to help protect our bodies from damage.

CoQ10 is mainly found in organs such as the liver, kidney, and heart. Foods from which we may receive CoQ10 are soy oil, mackerel, beef, and peanuts. However, many people choose not to eat these items or don’t eat them enough, so it may be hard for many to get this nutrient from food alone.

This special vitamin decreases with age making it very important to receive through dietary supplements. CoQ10 helps support normal blood pressure levels, while also promoting healthy cardiovascular function. It also supports energy production, helps reduce cellular oxidative stress throughout the body, and exhibits antioxidant and neuro-protective properties.

This is a great supplement to add to your diet as you get older to prevent losing too much of this powerful nutrient. Around the age of 30 your CoQ10 levels start to decline dramatically, so if you haven’t thought about CoQ10, it might be time to consider adding it to your routine.

3. Fish Oil

Fish oil contains omega-3 fatty acids that the body cannot produce on its own. Omega-3s are difficult to receive because their primary source is fish, which many people just do not like or cannot eat because of allergies. This supplement is available for those who do not have the ability to get their omega-3 fatty acids in their normal, everyday diet.

Fish oil is another one of those “super vitamins” in which the benefits to taking it stretch far and wide. It’s been said to support mood and mental well-being so well that the supplement has been nicknamed “brain food.” Fish oil helps maintain healthy blood pressure levels while also supporting the cardiovascular system.

The list just keeps going for this supplement, fish oil can help support our immune systems and many athletes will take it to help keep off that little bit of unwanted weight that can build up on our lower stomachs. Fish oil is an all around great supplement to consider taking at any age. It will support your mood and help you feel better the longer you consistently take it.

4. Glucosamine

Glucosamine is produced naturally inside our bodies, particularly in the fluid around our joints. There are two types of glucosamine that are available in pill form, one with hydrochloride and the other with sulfate. The glucosamine that contains sulfate is believed to be the component that helps stimulate the growth of new cartilage in our bodies. This particular nutrient is some-times produced by shellfish, but that doesn’t mean that we can receive it from food. Glucosamine doesn’t occur naturally in any food, making it difficult for us to receive without taking additional supplements.

Because of its ability to stimulate cartilage growth, glucosamine eases the joint pain that comes along with many bone diseases. In addition to our joints, it also supports our structural, nervous, and even our immune systems.

If you’ve been noticing joint pain then consider this as an option to add to your daily supplements. Glucosamine is another great one for athletes to consider because of its ability to help support comfortable joints.

5. Vitamin D

You probably think you get enough vitamin D through your diet. However, most of our vitamin D is absorbed through the body from direct sunlight, making this a great supplement for those who don’t live in areas that are constantly sunny. Vitamin D can also be found in certain types of fish, but is usually added to various dairy products for people to receive. Because many people have food allergies, the supplement is a great option for those who do not receive enough vitamin D through sunlight or their diet.

One of the main functions of this vitamin is to help keep our bodies from bone loss, pain, and even weak bones. Because of this vitamin’s ability to maintain calcium and phosphorus levels in our bodies, it’s an all around great vitamin to support bone health at any age.

Just like fish oil, vitamin D is a great one to start thinking about taking early on in life. Bone loss is a very serious issue and it’s important to start thinking about how to care for your bones as early as possible. It’s never too late to consider your long-term health.

6. Olive Leaf Extract

Many of you have probably made the switch to cooking with olive oil in the past ten years. It has a great taste and isn’t as unhealthy as some of the other oils out there. With the many uses for olive oil that keep popping up, have you thought that it isn’t just used for cooking?

Every component of the olive tree can be used to create something beneficial for our bodies. The oil part comes from the seeds and fruit, while the water extracts and leaves are used for medicine.

Olive leaf extract protects our bodies from unwanted invaders. This is a great supplement to take throughout the year because it’s been said to support the immune system. Olive leaf can also support the circulatory, urinary, and digestive systems. Additionally, the fatty acids in the oil have been said to support blood pressure and blood sugar levels already within the normal range. It also fights free radical damage by bad cholesterol.

Who knew the uses for the olive tree extended so far beyond the kitchen?

7. GreenZone

Getting the right amount of vegetables in our diets can be extremely difficult. Even if you’re an avid veggie-eater, sometimes the ones you consume may not be packed with enough nutrients to satiate your body’s needs. Sometimes you just need to get a little extra boost to your already healthy daily routine.

You’ve heard of adding greens to your diet with powders in smoothies, but why not try a taking a capsule of your daily dose of greens? Ultimate GreenZone is packed full of various green vegetables, like broccoli and kale, that many people are adding to their daily meal plans.

We know that hearty kale isn’t for everyone. GreenZone is great for those who can’t seem to get those nutritious vegetables into their diets the old fashioned way. This supplement allows you to get your daily recommended amount without having to force yourself to eat the vegetables you don’t like.

This supplement will help your body maintain its natural functions so that you feel energized. An additional bonus to GreenZone is that it helps support our body’s immune systems and enhances elimination.

VSC ~ The Herbal Flu Shot

~ Written by Steven Horne

Dr. Wenwei Xie, a traditional Chinese medical doctor had come to the United States because of our great concern over viral infections. Dr. Xie had worked on a research project concerning Herpes simplex viruses and cancer at a teaching hospital. His research showed that formulas of Chinese herbs could be very effective against viruses like Herpes simplex. However, they were unable to isolate any “active constituents” from these herbal formulas which could be turned into drugs that would be effective against herpes. So, after a couple of years they told Dr. Xie that his herb formulas worked, but since they couldn’t get any drugs out of them, they weren’t interested. They said basically, “We’re only interested in drugs; we don’t want to mess with herbs.”

I was provided at that time with a lab test which showed that Dr. Xie’s herbal formula reduced plaque counts of viral dilutions by more than 50%, with no toxicity present. According to Barb Hribar, Dr. Bruce Halstead (a noted M.D., scientist and supporter of nutritional therapy for the immune system) commented that the synergistic effect of these herbs in the human body would be expected to produce even more impressive results. It may also prove to be synergistic with other immune-enhancing herbs and nutrients.

I started lobbying the research and development department to get them to add this formula to NSP’s Chinese herb line. It took me about a year, but I finally got them to bring the formula into the NSP line. I’m glad I was persistent, because it has been an amazing formula for a wide variety of chronic viral infections.

Dr. Xie called this formula Kang Weng, which means “Anti-Febrile Evil”. It’s currently marketed under the brand name VS-C or HRP-C (in Canada). Because he could not find employment in this country, Dr. Xie was forced to return to mainland China.

Uses for VS-C

Dr. Xie said that VS-C wasn’t just for Herpes. It could be used for any infection and infectious diseases, especially those of a viral nature such as influenza, infective hepatitis or chickenpox and shingles. It is helpful for weak people who have reduced function of the immune system and have chronic flare ups of infection that produce fever, redness, skin eruptions or inflammation. It is also helpful for people who have used antibiotics for a long time without controlling their infections.

Ingredients in VS-C

Here are the ingredients in this formula:

Dandelion is an alterative and a tonic that aids the function of the liver, kidneys, stomach and blood. It reduces inflammation and relieves sores. It has been used to treat lymphatic swelling and bacterial infections. It gently detoxifies the body.

Scute Root is an antiseptic that reduces inflammation, relieves pain and promotes the production of bile. It has been used to treat dysentery, urinary tract infection, skin ailments, coughs, colds and fever.

Purslane reduces fevers and chills and kills bacteria. It has been used to treat warts, corns, sores, stings, dysentery, parasites and malaria.

Indigo Herb detoxifies the blood, reduces fever and is anti-inflammatory. It has been used to treat rashes, abscess, fever, thirst, sore throat, hepatitis, jaundice, salmonella, encephalitis, cancer, swelling and skin ulcers.

Indigo Root is a bitter herb with cool energy. It reduces fever and swelling (especially in the throat) and purifies the blood. It has been used to treat jaundice, salmonella, strep, parasites, encephalitis, rashes, abscess, mental disease, ulcers and cancer.

Thlaspi expels pus, purifies the blood, reduces fever and arrests pain. It has been used to treat abscesses, abdominal pain, conjunctivitis, hepatitis, ulcers and mumps.

Typhonium flagelliforme is a Chinese herb used to relieve coughing. It also has analgesic and anti-inflammatory action.

Bupleurum is a major Chinese herb for the liver. It helps reduce fever and has been used to treat lung congestion, malaria, hepatitis and eruptive diseases.

The catalysts of this combination are as follows:

Siberian Ginseng is a general adaptagen and tonic. It increases circulation and stimulates the adrenal, pancreas and pituitary glands to reduce inflammation. It has been used to treat swelling.

Cinnamon Twig is an antiseptic herb. It strengthens the stomach, stimulates digestive fluids and increases blood flow. It has been used to treat colds, poor circulation and weak heart.

Licorice is an expectorant that increases energy, especially around vital organs. Licorice soothes irritated mucous membranes. It has been used to treat colds, coughs, sore throat, ulcers and to provide relief from poisons.
